The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (R.A.V.E.) Recreation and Vessel Enforcement Unit is a group of Deputy Sheriff’s who have received specialized training in various areas of Recreational Enforcement. This unit is responsible for enforcing the various laws pertaining to such recreational vehicles as Snowmobiles, All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), Boats and Personal Watercraft. Approximately 32% of the Sheriff’s Office patrol area consists of 585 square miles of waterway.
In 2007 the Sheriff’s Office R.A.V.E. Team received a new Boat for Patrol. The vessel , a 30 foot craft with an aluminum hull, was made locally at R.J. Marine Associates, Ltd. In Clayton, NY and paid for with a federal grant. The boat is named after Deputy Michael J. Finerson, who was shot and killed on September 9, 1970; while responding to a domestic dispute on Weaver Road in the Town of Watertown.
